I had to us -f to get my patch to install.

-f|--force            Bypasses checks for package dependencies, conflicts, obsolescence, and acceptance levels. Really not recommended unless you know what you are doing. Use of this option will result in a warning being displayed in vSphere Web Client.  Use this option only when instructed to do so by VMware Technical Support. Oops, I wasn't instructed to do so by VMware Technical Support.

esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/5ef65b76-45af59da-b53b-b8aeedec0f2e/VMware-ESXi-X.X-XXXXXXX-depot.zip -f
